Ok well I thought I might put this all in a thread as I guess you guys an girls would be interested in it. It's not specifically an Indy style shoot as I don't actually own any Indy gear but it's definitely in that adventure style. No specific time-scale either to make costume more free choice. I thought you guys might be interested in it as you probably do similar shoots or have idea's of doing similar shoots to show off your gear.
Firstly I guess I would make a quick introduction, I'm a professional photographer by trade (www.creativecaptures.co.uk) I also do a lot of photography as a hobby part of that has made me challenge myself to doing a 365 which basically entails taking a photo everyday for a year. These shots can be seen here in a flickr set, this will be updated every day as I take the shots. Some of the shots are just macro shots if im particularly busy that day or just not terribly inspired, some are a lot more than that and end up being quite elaborate planned shoots. I've started to plan some more to my series of adventure photos I posted over in the exhibition/gallery section, this would be the fourth in the series and I've been ramping them up in complexity.
Original shot, in my bedroom lit just by the lighter.
Second shot, in my bedroom lit by the lighter and soft additional light to fill in a bit more details (so the shadows have some detail)
Third shot, on-location in the ruins of Castle Archdale. The sun was going down providing a little bit of light to light the surroundings then the lighter to provide the fill light.
The basic idea behind this shoot is to be some adventure style shots in an cave like enviroment as the last set where taken in the ruins of a castle but really only just a part of each wall is visible, I want greater ambience.
The first thing was to decide on a location, having known of the Marble Arch Caves area from being there a few years ago taking photographs. After that I took a spin out to take a few photographs of the location to help me plan a bit more, also I was already out that direction taking photos anyway.
Location
The location is just a large arch but I intend to shoot it after sunset as the light is going down or using other techniques I'll mention later.
The Entrance:
Here you can see the little tunnel, around the other side is the big arch.
The tunnel from the other side. I plan on taking a few shots of me crawling through this lit by a zippo lighter like the other shots, as it will be dark you wont be able to tell how long the tunnel is.
Entrance to the big arch
Inside the arch itself. I can stand up on the right hand ledge straight so I'll probably take a few shots with me standing there overlooking the 'cave'.
This shot just shows the arch itself quite well.
'Maggys hole' This hole in the ceiling I am thinking of trying to get some light going down from it but that could be very very hard to get with the restrictions that i'll have.
Thats the location so you should have some idea's how that could be used in a movie type scene, I have lots of idea's so far just need to figure out the logistics and get myself a few willing bodies to help me.
Lighting
There is loads of options open to me as far as the lighting goes, I unfortunately dont have the budget to make a moviescene out of the place so I have to go for some more ghetto solutions. (also if I wanted to go for a really complex setup that would require getting permits to shoot in a european geopark...)
I will probably go for manipulating natural light and use some flashes for additional lighting. One particular technique is to shoot with the ambient light and overpower the light with the flashes. This lets you set the camera to basically take dark photos with the normal daylight making it look like night time (or a cave!) The flash then fires powerful enough to lighten up the subject to make it look like it was shot in the dark with some additional lighting.
The other alternative is to actually shoot in the dark, this means I dont need lights that can output anywhere near the same amount of power as the first type of lighting but then you have the danger of people climbing about on slippery rocks in pitch black (sounds like an accident waiting to happen). I'll have to do a few more lighting tests before I decide fully what sort of lighting I am going to go for.
Thats as far as I've gotten with the shoot. I so far have one person roped into helping me too but I'll possibly need another. I'll update this thread when I get more done on the shoot and hopefully finish it off with the final results!
