Hi everyone,
what's more screen-accurate to Raiders the Dark Brown Lambskin or the Authentic Brown Lambskin from Wested?
Anyone know this? I assumed the 'Dark Brown' was well ... darker and therefore more screen accurate. But maybe I'm wrong here. Wested doesn't really give very good photo comparisons on their site so its difficult to tell.
I ordered and recieed a Washed Goat Raiders style and think its a wonderful jacket. At first I was a little harsh, and thought the color too light, but now I think its perfect.
But still I wanted to see what their Lambskin was like and ordered the Dark brown, now I'm a bit worreid that I chose the wrong color for being SA.
I've alread contacted Peter and Gemma and asked them, if I'm in time and able to change my choice if necessary. But so far no response yet.
Any tips, hints, advice on this one?
Thanks. Rich rmh0099@hotmail.com

I'd go with the authentic brown, their dark brown has purple tint to it that I don't like, JMO.

KT,
I thought that their old DB had the purple tint, and that the newer batches of hides had more of a greyish undertone?

Many people in this hobby like to tell others what they should buy or what they think is most accurate, but here's the bottom line....
The actual screen used jackets "may" have been closer to the authentic brown color offered by Wested. However, those jackets were then artificially aged, which included adding shoe polish or various oils, depending on which story is being told that week. Add the physical changes in color to the various lighting setups and post processing of the film, and you get a jacket that appears darker than the authentic brown in almost every situation.
This is why many people prefer the dark brown hide choices by Wested, G&B, etc... as the jacket looks more like what they see when they watch the movie (myself included). I've seen photos of both hides that look great in different situations, as well as some that really show a striking difference. The authentic may look too milk chocolate in direct sun, while the dark brown may look almost black indoors. I've also seen many photos that contradict this, based on the lighting and various camera settings used in the examples.
In the end, it's all opinion and only your's counts if your spending your own money. I suggest that you look at every photo you can of the color options you're considering and go with what you like best.

I've owned both and much prefer dark brown for the reasons stated above. If you're really unsure, ask for a sample of each.

Well, it may be a bit late for that -- I placed my order on Dec. 18th. At least, I sorta hope it's too late -- I'm hoping the jackets have been shipped by now...

Hi Guys,
I ordered a Dark Brown Lambskin only to wonder and get confused about it all so then i asked Wested after my post here. Here's the letter I sent and the response from Gemma:
Hi Peter/Gemma, I don't know if you have started putting together the jacket yet or not for my new order. But which, I was wondering is the darker Lambskin? The Authentic Brown or the Dark Brown Lamb? I ordered the 'Dark Brown' thinking this was the darker of the two and therefore more screen-accurate for Raiders of the Lost Ark. Am I mistaken? Is the Authentic Brown darker and therefore more screen-accurate. Should I change to Authentic Brown for the darker, Raiders look? Is it too late to change? If the Authentic Brown is darker and more screen-accurate I'd rather have Authentic Brown. Its very difficult to tell on the website Please let me know right away.
Response from Gemma:
Dear Richard, I have spoken to Peter and cleared this up,the jacket was made from the authentic brown lambskin, this is called authentic due to being the Original leather that wa sused for the film. Cheers Gemma

That's the standard company line. According to Wested, the "AUTHENTIC" Brown is the closest (here they even go so far as to tell you it's the same) color to the hide used for the original jacket. End of story, right? Wrong. Like Ken (Ragingblues) said, the jackets used in Raiders may have started out as the Authentic brown color, but through the process of distressing / aging them and due to the effects of lighting in various scenes, they APPEAR much darker when viewed on film through most of the movie. So while Wested says the Authentic brown is the "same" color as the jacket in the movie, the jacket in the movie actually appears darker than that for the most part, and that darker, "on screen" color is closer to the "DARK BROWN" option.

What if you get authentic brown and add Pecard's to it?

You could, as I've owned two of them. Ken Oh really? Yeah... hundreds of people have owned dark brown Indy jackets from Wested, not any of the specials... the standard quality jackets. I owned/sold a lambskin and a goatskin in dark brown. Ken

Wested says that the authentic is just that--the authentic color. I think the dark brown looks more like you see on screen but this may be one of those things where you have to decide if you want what the jacket actually was or more of what it looked like on film.
