Recently I read something about being able to tell what type of leather a jacket was made from by it's weight. Supposedly this person while on the phone with this other person [Harrison Ford] told him that his Last Crusade Jacket weighed twice as much as his G&B Lambskin Jacket. From this the person was able to determine that the LC Jacket was Cowhide..... WRONG . You cannot determine the type of hide by weight. How the heck would I know you ask. My U.S. Wings / Cooper Lambskin Jacket is double the weight of my Expedition Lambskin Jacket. U.S. WINGS / COOPER G&B EXPEDITION Any thoughts on this? Cheers, John

I think you are correct. While I never weighed my Indy jackets, I can easily say that my first Wested (lambskin) weighed less than my second Wested (also lamsbkin). And second (current) Wested also weighs more than my G&B (which is, you guessed it, lambskin). I completely fail to see how anyone can claim the weight of a jacket alone is enough to determine the type of leather that was used to construct the jacket. That idea seems flawed and overly simplistic. Hasn't Peter always maintained that the LC jackets were made from lambskin? Wouldn't he know better than anyone? There are plenty of scenes in LC where the jacket flaps and moves like a lambskin jacket would. But I guess I must be seeing things.

The lamb on that coopers looks remarkably like the lamb on antique wings and the lamb that Nowak is using on his raiders.... how come his costs 3X the Wings?? I agree, certain people have sworn blind that you cannot even tell what animal leather is from 100% on sight and touch, citing that even DNA testing may not be usable as the DNA is disrupted by the tanning process... Now you can tell, sight unseen, OVER THE PHONE!??

That thought has crossed my mind many times over the last few days. I agree, certain people have sworn blind that you cannot even tell what animal leather is from 100% on sight and touch, citing that even DNA testing may not be usable as the DNA is disrupted by the tanning process... Now you can tell, sight unseen, OVER THE PHONE!?? That same person is the one who has made both claims.......A bit contradictory.....I'd say. nudge, nudge. Cheers, John

What about horse, buffalo, pigskin, camel, kangaroo, or naughahyde? I never knew each hide (in jacket form) had it's own exclusive weight. Regardless of size and insulation/lining matarial too I guess? Wow. This one is right up there with guessing your birthday.

The real question is, what weighs the most.... a lambskin jacket, a cowhide jacket, a goatskin jacket, or a giant bag of absurd lies?

Ken This sounds like one of those trick questions...like "which weighs more, a pound of salt or a pound of seawater." Wait a minute, I just remembered, the bag of absurd lies weighs more than the others! Of course, the type of bag the absurd lies come in does factor into things. If it's made from cowhide, it will weigh twice as much as a bag of absurd lies made from lambskin. (obviously!) But just to be sure, I better give Harrison Ford a call just to double check, since he seems to be so readily available to discuss trivial bits of information with random people associated with online forums that discuss the clothes he wore in some movies back in the 80's.

Now, don't go making this more difficult by introducing common sense.
Just be sure to check his schedule before you call. If he and Calista have flown out to the midwest on one of those spur of the moment dinner invitations, you'll just wind up talking to his answering machine.

Must have been a dinner date with John to discuss Indy V costumes Yes, they come here so often that I have turned my garage into an airplane hangar and built an addition onto the back of my home for thier overnight stays. Then we discuss how many teeth are on the zippers of the various jackets into the wee hours of the night. ;D Seriously though, nope not me. I do not know any big wigs. The closest I ever came was a Thank you call from Bernie. Cheers, John

Don't forget to add the weight of the inner pocket gents! As we all know, Peter changed the design of the inner pocket frame on the LC jackets (=more leather). And based on my sources - which unfortunately I can't tell who they are or how I came in touch with them or why they'd know, other than they they're some BIG names - the inner pocket on the LC jacket was much deeper then it was on the other jackets, as - due to new law restrictions - Ford had to carry his passport with him during the shoting of LC (in opposite to the other movies). Hence more liner and thereby more weight Regards, Marc

Plus, weren't the inside leather facings and the leather trim around the inside pocket LC additions that weren't featured on the Raiders jacket? Plus the press studs on the storm flaps...I'm sure it all adds up, though my gut tells me the Raiders jacket was just made with a thinner cut of lambskin, and that is where the biggest weight difference probably comes from.

No, no. The Raiders jacket was made from some thick sheepskin, but it was so poor quality and cheaply put together, that the weight was considerable less.
The leather facings and the bigger pockets to fit the grail diary DID add to the weight though. Not to mention the heavier facing that is between the leather and the liner. I cannot tell you how many phone calls and e-mails it took me to find out.
Regards,
Marc
