Don't read this if you haven't seen the film.
The third installment of the Mummy series takes a departure from the previous two films but still provides an entertaining mix of fantasy and adventure. Rachel Weiss chose to pass on this one but I'm not sure why. Maybe she's too serious to do a popular movie. I don't know. She should have done it. Many of the character moments, aka the talky scenes, are pretty good, infact better written and more interesting than Indy 4. The lady who takes over for Weiss does a good job but selling her as the Evelyn character is a bit of a hurdle that the film has to overcome. There's also some weird chronology. This film takes place immediately after WWII, over twenty years later than the first film. Brendan Fraiser looks exactly as he did in the first movie but now he has a son with an accent different from him and his wife and who looks only about 10 years his junior. I'm not sure why they chose to advance the timeline so far. It seems completely unnecessary. If you can get past all that, the father son chemistry works well and has more depth than another recent father son adventure film that comes to mind. As in the previous Mummy films, the supporting cast adds some dimension and flavor to what is otherwise a fairly simple fantasy/adventure yarn. It's aways great to see the beautiful Michelle Yeoh and John Hannah earns his pay as the comedic brother. The scope, sets and settings of the film are also first class and impressive. In addition to all the CGI showboating, there are also some good old fashion gun fights. It's refreshing to see some adventurers who are still willing to drop the hammer on a few nameless badguys. If you liked the first two, you'll probably like this one as much or more. I think it's far superior to the 2nd film. It won't blow your socks off but it's definitely worth the price of admission.
