Hello all. I just thought I'd start a thread about the new Star Trek movie. Has anyone heard anything about it. If not, it's going to take place before the Original Series from the '60s. It's even going to have Christopher Pike as Captain of the USS Enterprise... at first. I suspect Kirk will take the reins by the end of the movie. Now, there's a practically complete list of characters with actors' names at IMDb: www.imdb.com/title/tt0796366/. There are some questionable choices IMO. Like the role of Amanda, Spock's mother, is going to Winona Ryder. Is she old enough? Also, the actor portraying Scotty is Simon Pegg from Shaun of the Dead and Run, Fat Boy, Run. Does he look anything like James Doohan? And can he pull off as phony a Scottish accent as Doohan? ;D My point is that most of the actors, with the exception of Chris Pine as Kirk, and Zachary Quinto as Spock, look very little like the original actors. Wow, I didn't intend to type so much. -Josh

I'm definitely a fan of the original series. I was actually up late last night and caught an old episode. It must have been years since I watched one, because I had no idea that they re-mastered the series. The newly added special effects, while well done, aren't my thing. I understand why they did it. Some of these kids today won't sit through an episode with the original F/X. To me, thats part of the appeal. As for the new film, all I can say is that I'm looking forward to seeing Diora Baird dressed-up as the Green Girl. The rest of the movie could be total crap, but that would make it for me.

I enjoyed the original series but nothing really beyond that. The scripts and ideas of the original series were very creative. They didn't have elaborate special effects to fall back. They had to keep the audience's interest with excellent writing and well developed character relationships. That's something that's been totally lost in later incarnations. Sometimes having to deal with limitations like a low budget or underdeveloped effects can make filmmakers invest more in the story and characters which isn't a bad thing. The new film's biggest challenge will be to bridge the gap between the geeks and the popular audience. If they can somehow manage to make Star Trek seem cool and fun and less like a nerd religion, they may have a big hit on their hands. I wish them luck but remain very skeptical.

I'm excited about the new movie as well as skeptical. I doubt it will live up to the expectations of the Original Series fans, like me. But I think it has a decent chance. If anything, it will bring Star Trek back into the limelight for a few weeks. Especially if it's good.
One thing I hope they do. If there are any Klingons, lets hope they look like TOS bad guys, not the post-movies guys.

I enjoyed watching the original Star Trek TV series when I was young. I've never seen any of the updated versions of the original series, so I'll be sure to check them out the next time I see it listed on a satellite network.
I even enjoyed Next Generation when I was older, though I didn't clear my schedule to watch it. I caught most of them in syndication, to be honest. It had a totally different feel to it, but that was intentional.
I guess I have no expectations for the new movie. I just hope it's done with respect to the characters and mood of the original series, as I think anything less wouldn't fly with most people.

i gotta say, the guy who's playing Spock...(Zachary Quinto) is a dead ringer for a young Leonard Nimoy. I'm a fan of ST, but I want to see more in the next trailer....

Why is William Shatner Not in Star Trek? www.comingsoon.net/news/startreknews.php?id=48646AMC's SciFi Scanner talked to Star Trek director J.J. Abrams, who explained why you won't see William Shatner reprising the role of Captain James T. Kirk:
Q: How do you react to William Shatner's ire at not having a role in the movie?
A: It was very tricky. We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn't quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn't want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It's funny -- a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.
Paramount Pictures will release Star Trek on May 8, 2009.Ken

Why is William Shatner Not in Star Trek? Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that. Set it up before Kirk croaked. Then you have Kirk and Spock travel back in time(like they've done a dozen times before)to help thier younger selves on thier first mission or you have Kirk and Spock reminiscing/regretting how they wish they would have partied harder and got more action back in Starfleet Academy. Kirk has this bright idea to use the Enterprise to travel back in time to set things right and basically a Rodney Dangerfield's "Back to School" meets "Start Trek" teen comedy ensues. ;D

The way Abrams works, it wouldn't surprise me to see Shatner in the movie. It could be misinformation.

The Shat has responded to JJ Abrams comments regarding the upcoming "Star Trek" movie: www.comingsoon.net/news/startreknews.php?id=49021(The above link includes a YouTube video of Shatner's comments, which are much more extensive than posted below... and very interesting as well.) In what all is starting to sound like miscommunication, William Shatner has responded to Star Trek director J.J. Abrams' comments from last week about why the actor is not reprising the role of Captain James T. Kirk in the May 8, 2009 release.
It seems to us that someone in the film's production told Abrams that Shatner didn't want to do a cameo and wanted the movie to focus on him. As you can see from the video below, Shatner says he was never contacted by someone about taking part in the movie, but agrees that he wouldn't be up for just a cameo and suggests they resurrect him in the follow-up.Ken

Just as I suspected. Ofcourse they didn't offer him the part. JJ Abrams has his own vision for this project and doesn't involve Shatner. It's too bad, because a cameo would have been great. At least Shatner has a good sense of humor about the whole thing.

'Star Trek': An exclusive first look at the Enterprisepopwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/11/star-trek-first.htmlPhoto link only: popwatch.ew.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/11/11/enterprise579_l.jpgJJ Abrams wasn't a huge fan of the original Star Trek TV series as a kid, but he does have one unabashed gee-whiz Star Trek memory: watching the first feature film (1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture) and marveling over the big reveal of the Enterprise during a long sequence in which James T. Kirk takes a slow-boat tour around the iconic starship. "The coolest thing about it—maybe the coolest thing in the movie—was when you flew around the ship, you could see all the different panels that made up the ship," says the director of the forthcoming Trek reboot, slated for a May 8, 2009 release. "It was the first time I had ever seen that level of attention, that love of detail, given to the tangible, practical reality of the ship."
Here, in this exclusive first look at Abrams' take on the Enterprise, you not only see his vision of the ship, but his attempt to evoke that sequence from the first film that so captured his imagination. If you're thinking, "Wow! It looks the way the Enterprise has always looked"—well look at the big Spock brain on you! Abrams wanted to take the original TV series Enterprise and the movie franchise Enterprise and fuse them together into a new yet familiar Enterprise. His ambition was a ship that felt very realistic, that could "stand up" to today's f/x standards—and beyond. "If you're going to do Star Trek there are many things you cannot change. The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you're going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?"
Fans and other interested parties will get more looks at the new Enterprise when the first trailer arrives this Friday, attached to Quantum of Solace. And if you missed the additional 11 Star Trek photos we debuted last month, click here and check 'em out:www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20233788,00.html It looks great and I'm sure the movie will be just fine. However, it doesn't seem right that a guy that wasn't even a big fan of the TV series gets to tell the origin story. Now, it's no wonder he didn't write a decent part for an older Kirk in this movie.... Ken

Thanks for the new info, Ken. Wow... the new Enterprise looks really weird. The uniforms look cool, though. I like most of the actors cast, too. This movie will be interesting. I just hope it doesn't upset the Star Trek purists (ones more obsessed with it than me ;D).

Star Trek Footage Debuts in New Yorkwww.comingsoon.net/news/startreknews.php?id=50627It's been over a year since it was announced that J.J. Abrams, executive producer and co-creator of "Alias," "Lost" and "Fringe," would be taking over the reins for Paramount's reboot of Star Trek.
Except for a teaser earlier this year, a bunch of pictures and some cool posters, not very much has been revealed about the plot except that it would feature a much younger version of the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise than we'd seen in any of the previous television shows or movies. Casting started to leak out of Comic-Con over a year ago and for every questionable choice like Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, there was excitement surrounding the dual casting of Spock, the younger version played by Zachary Quinto (Sylar from "Heroes") and bringing back Leonard Nimoy for an appearance as the older Spock. The younger Sulu would be played by John Cho (Harold of the "Harold & Kumar" movies), Uhura by Zoe Saldana (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl), Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) would take on the role of Maximillian "Scotty" Scott while Karl Urban would play the younger Dr. "Bones" McCoy.
With the unveiling of the film's first full trailer over the weekend—if you haven't seen it, you can watch it here--excitement for the film has been renewed, although that trailer doesn't give a very good impression of the characters or story, instead being a lot of quick-cut images and visuals from the movie.
The question whether this new Star Trek would stand up to the 40-plus year tradition was answered tonight as J.J. Abrams landed in New York City after a cross-Europe jaunt to show 25 minutes of footage from the movie. It was originally scheduled to come out on Christmas Day this year, but it was wisely pushed back to early next summer by Paramount.
Abrams was introduced by Paramount President of Production John Lesher after showing the trailer, and Abrams went through his normal spiel about not being a fan of "Star Trek" ("I never quite got it") and how he assembled a team of collaborators that included everyone from diehard Trekkers like Roberto Orci to producer Bryan Burk, who knew nothing about it, having never seen a single show. At that point, Abrams still wasn't sure if he wanted to actually direct the movie until he read the finished script by Orci and his writing and production partner Alex Kurtzman, which Abrams described as "funny, emotional, thrilling." After working on the project for over a year, he was ready to show four nearly-completed scenes to the audience of journalists and studio reps.
SPOILER WARNING: In the following description of the footage shown, we discuss very specific scenes from the movie, including a couple of spoilers of what happens in those scenes:www.comingsoon.net/news/startreknews.php?id=50627I chose not to include the spoiler info from the story, here at Indy Lounge. If you would like to click one of the story links above and read it, please do so. I only ask that you not come back here and discuss the spoiler info itself. Your feelings about everything else are welcome, of course. Ken

I'm kind of disappointed that the Enterprise doesn't match the one from the old series. I expected them to make it more detailed and "believable" but still recognizably the same. It seems they changed it quite a bit inside and out. It's seems odd to do this and yet keep the old school uniforms. I guess I'll reserve judgement until I see it. It is nice to see Star Trek finally get a big budget treatment unlike the old nickel and dime Trek films that Paramount used to make. Maybe this time they'll have enough gas money to visit an "alien world" outside of LA County.

The new ship looks too strange. And why did they change Scotty's name to "Maximillian"? It has always Montgomery! Looks like they are changing everything they can. -Josh
