Hello, this is my first post on this site, which looks amazing! I have a quick question. I was thinking of buying an original Wested Raiders jacket. However I noticed it was offered in authentic brown lambskin, dark brown lambskin, pre distressed hide and dark brown horse hide. I was wondering which of these was the original color and material from the film?
Many thanks.

WELCOME! Everyone will have a different opinion on this one. I think that the authentic brown lambskin is the best looking leather. But it needs to be distressed to look the part. Take a look at the pic of the jacket I posted in the LFCC thread. That is a authentic brown Wested lamb. Compare it to the Smithsonian jacket.

I'm going to agree with KT on this one. If you want a jacket made by the original maker, using materials that are as close to the original as possible, then go with the Wested Authentic Brown Lambskin. Most folks say it is indeed as close as one can get to the original leather color used for Raiders, though (as KT noted) to look the part, it'll need some distressing.
I will say that the dark brown lambskin does look more correct (color-wise) for certain scenes, but again, distressing, as well as the lighting, can really play with the way we perceive colors on screen. Dark brown would be a good choice if you plan on wearing the jacket a LOT for many years, as it tends to lighten nicely over time (I've got a DB lambskin from 2003 that looks just a shade darker than a brand new authentic brown jacket)

Thanks guys for your replies! I always thought the jacket was lamb dark brown. KT. Templar said, about the LFCC thread, I wondered where this was?

Thanks a lot, I live near London and heard about that event, however I was busy. Wish I had gone though! So you think the normal brown lamb is ideal. I see what you mean with different shots in the films, thats what I was unsure about, since I believed the jacket to be dark brown. I'm not sure how bad the colour fades over time though. Is this Wested picture the brown or dark brown lamb then? It seems too dark to be a normal brown: www.indyjacket.co.uk/Lamb[1].jpg

Don't rule out the Novapelle either from Wested, COW recently had some threads with pics on it, and it looks just incredible...

T-Rex what do you mean when you refer to "normal" brown, there's either authentic brown and dark brown, neither one is a default standard is it? As for the Novapelle, I've always assumed that it was sourced to make the CS jackets and too me that jacket is soo far off from what a Raiders jacket ever looked like, it has become the last leather I'd consider for a Raiders ...but the first (and only) choice for a CS - JMHO as always.

Lol sorry, I mean is it authentic brown or dark brown. Or for that matter, is there much difference between the two?

I've had many Indy jackets, several have been Westeds..but only one of them was an authentic brown and to me it had a grey tint to it i(viewed in real life) that bothered me a little. I never distressed it and now I would bet that it would have improved the jacket immensely. For me (and others too I'd imagine) I think that the dark brown is closer to what we see on screen most in Raiders (as apposed to the other films) atleast closer when viewed in real life. However, I am currently eager to get another authentic brown wested just for the purpose of distressing it. So, I know that's not much help, but atleast something to think about.

The one in that pic is an Authentic Brown, dark brown has a redder warm brown undertone, the authentic has a yellower brown.
It's a bit like the difference between milk chocolate and dark chocolate.
