Well, it's official. I guess I'm a gun nut.... I picked up a brand new unfired Model 22 of 1917 last month for a price that I couldn't refuse. I ditched those newfangled grips that came with it and slapped on a very nice set of pristine Keith Brown made grips. (his website can be found here: www.classiccarvedgrips.com/ ) I also have a spare barrel that I plan to put on it and cut down to 4 inches to try to get as close to the Stembridge as I can with a modern Smith. Here are the pics:

Thanks guys! Griff, the conversion will take a while. Hopefully, my Bapty will be done in the mean time. My gunsmith reminds me of Steve and Marc. He's just as busy as he can be, but he won't take any shortcuts.

Is there any chance you still have those "newfangled" grips? I'd be happy to buy them off of you if you were interested.

Andy,
Man that is a real BEAUTY. I hate the fact that I cannot own one of those here in Chicago. At least not within the limits of the law.
Congatulations on the new S&W you lucky.......
Cheers, John

Thanks John! That's a shame about Chicago. I suppose they only want the criminals to have all the guns over there.

Love to see pics of the converted barrel when it's done. Regarding where you can have one, well, hopefully the recent Heller decision will allow you to be a citizen again soon.

My friggin' gunsmith takes way to long to do anything. I'm looking for someone else to cut this particular gun's barrel. I'll be sure to post pics when something has finally been done.

The M22 is a project I won't get to for a while. The reason isn't monetary...it's just that I'm impatient, and I could have a couple of westeds and an AB in the time it takes my Gunsmith to even get back to me. On the other hand, my Bapty replica is still on the gunsmith's shelf. I wish I had some news. I called on Monday, but of course....... It's the gunsmith's day off.

Is there any news on this project?? I am looking into a Model 22 and would like to do a barrel cut and replace the half moon sight with a ramp style basically make it IDENTICAL to the raiders cairo gun.

The Raiders "Cairo" Gun is called the Bapty in this hobby. The Raiders "Suitcase" Gun is called the Stembridge. The Stembridge is the replica that Kaplan is trying to make with the M22 of 1917 mentioned in this thread. The last time he came by I asked him about his guns. His Bapty was all done and he has it now, but I didn't ask him about the Stembridge. Perhaps maybe I should've. If you want, Todd's Costumes has a PFC Gun that is literally 100% accurate to the Bapty. (orange tip notwithstanding) That may not be what you're looking for, if you're willing to buy a real gun and have it turned into a Bapty, but if it's 100% accuracy in every detail you want (which is what I assume you mean by "IDENTICAL"), you can at least buy the $200 Todd's replica alongside the real gun as a reference or something. Steven ah, well no, I have my share of replicas, mostly spirit of indy in nature. I am looking to eventually do real deal S&W "Bapty". I didn't realize that this was going to end up a stenbridge, but either way, most of the major modifications from stock are similar, i.e. cut barrel. I do realize they are different, but i was just hoping to hear how much the gunsmith was asking for a barrel cut and new sight mount, also, i am a big fan of picture blogs on prop progress.

It's a beautiful piece, would love to get one someday. Would love to see it when you get the barrell installed. By the way, how do you plan on weathering it?
