How many of you have seen or enjoy the TV show " Man VS. Wild"? dsc.discovery.com/fansites/manvswild/manvswild.htmlI started watching it a few weeks ago and really enjoy the show. He even wears some safari style shirts with epaulets and the standard khaki/cargo style pants. It's a pretty informative and entertaining show so I also wanted to let some people know about it if they haven't seen it. Ken

Man Vs. Wild is a great show! They had a similar but different show like this last year (without Bear) that showed the guy survive but never explained what he actually did in order to do so. Plus, he spent most of his time trekkiing his own camera gear around. Man Vs. Wild goes into some great detail on "what to do" in survival situations. I love the show.

Funny John, though I would rather eat that than some of the stuff he chokes down in the name of survival. I have been reading more about the guy from the website link I posted above. For those who haven't seen it before, it's a very cool show and about as "outdoorsy" as you can get. Glad to know you like it as well Aeris, Ken

Ken,
I watched part of the show last night. He was in the Everglades.
I would never go on a trip with Bear, I would be thinking "How far does this have to go before this guy will kill and eat me" ;D
Cheers, John

I am a big fan of the show and Bear, himself. His mini-series on the French Foreign Legion is a must see. They replay it sometimes on the Military Channel. I think the title is Escape to the Legion. I really enjoy Man vs. Wild but the show does have it's critics. I do wish they would post a disclaimer that some of the situations are staged for demonstration purposes. That doesn't mean it's fake but just that certain situations are set up for demonstrating a particular technique some of which may be extreme. I think that would quiet some of the critics. There's a couple of episodes where you can clearly see him wearing a life jacket but it's never addressed. Supposedly, the insurance people insisted on it. I just wish they would address these things and go on. Ignoring it just makes it more conspicuous. Overall, I think it's the best (maybe only) action adventure show on tv. The other survival show is SurvivorMan with Les Stroud. This one is actually much less dramatic and more down to earth. I think both are good. They just take vastly different approaches.

To look over at Bear and think, "Uh...now at what phase of your survival are we at here?" ::gulp:: Survivor Man, that was it, Havana. Thanks. I always kinda looked at Man vs. Wild as their adjusted version of that one. While it was interesting, it left too many questions like, "Okay, but how did you survive?"

That show is awesome!!! It's one of those that's worth buying the season box set when it comes out IMO.

Man vs. Wild is an entertaining show. I have been looking forward to these new six episodes for a while now. A million gators in the Everglades? Count me out. Did anyone see the African Savana episode where he picks over the dead zebra for some meat? That's good TV.

Wow, I'm a bit late on this thread. I'm another huge fan of Man vs. Wild, I try not to miss it whenever I catch it on TV. There are still a couple of episodes I missed so far, but I've seen most of them. Awesome show! Favorite part so far has to be when Bear is trekking through a lava field in Hawaii and his shoes suddenly catch fire. I wonder what the insurance company had to say about that! ;D -GCR

The show is what it is.. entertaining and educational. I have never viewed it as anything but those two things, as with anything on else on television. Bring on the new season of Man Vs. Wild! And screw Survivorman! ;D Ken

Thanks for the head's up on this one, Nicht. But I have to agree with my esteemed colleagues. I would watch "Man vs. Wild" even if the entire thing were staged and scripted. It's a fun show and more than a few of the methods that Bear employs could come in handy in real-life situations. I kinda, sorta figured that at least some of the show was phony, but then again, I don't always believe everything I read in the papers, either. Oh yeah, and screw Survivorman! -GCR

I was kidding with the Survivorman bit, of course. I've never seen that show and was just makinga point in support of Man Vs. Wild. I also know Nicht was just sharing news here and not slamming the show, so please don't think any of this is directed at you Nicht. John and I talked about this news blurb on my way home from work today. I figured someone would mention it.
My view has always been that the point of Man Vs. Wild is to show you how to survive and find your way to safety in extreme environments. He even puts himself directly in harms way and eats things nobody should have to, just to demonstrate certain techniques for survival.
I watch it because I think Bear is a cool and likeable guy. I watch it for the footage of all these great locations he visits. I watch it for the use of natural tools and techniques that I may one day try myself... or worse, may even have to use! I never watch it thinking it's a reality show that is unaltered in any way (which none are, as we know). It is, afterall, entertainment first and foremost.... and that's the main reason I watch TV in the first place.

I have seen survivorman, and while I don't think it's a bad show (I was just kidding with the "screw survivorman" bit as well ) I don't find it as enjoyable as Man vs. Wild. It's funny in a way, as they are similar shows, but I think the pacing and the likeability of the host (as Ken pointed out) just seem to give MvW an edge, at least as far as I'm concerned. I certainly wouldn't channel surf through an episode of survivorman, though! How about this one: screw the New York Post! ;D -GCR

I watched a couple of episodes of "Survivorman" today and enjoyed it. The show has a very different feel to it than "Man Vs. Wild", but both are quite interesting. I would definitely watch it again. I can't help but notice that Les Stroud (Survivorman" looks an awful lot like our buddy Aeris Canon. Of course, Aeris has a more generous hairline.... but since Les is wearing a hat most of the time on the show, I keep seeing the resemblance to Aeris whenever I look at him. His voice even sounds similar, minus the slight difference in accents. Another good outdoor show to watch is a fine by me. Ken

Holy Crap! You know, the first episode I saw of Survivorman was the one where he's in the Everglades, and through that episode he had a bit more facial hair and wore a bandana most of the time. But in this pic, he sure as hell DOES look a lot like AC! That's all I'm going to be able to think of next time I watch this show... ;D Definitely a cool show, though, no matter who the host looks like. -GCR

I didn't mention, because it should be obvious... that when I say that Les reminds me of Aeris, I mean an older version as well. I just wanted to throw that part in, as I had no intention of artificially aging Aeris here. Ken
