Well, here's some new info I found over at one of the movie sites.
The Mummy 3 just got 'Cooler' Date : May 14, 2007 Posted By : Clint Morris
The dazzling and multitalented Maria Bello (“The Cooler”, “Coyote Ugly”, "A History of Violence") will replace Rachel ‘Not enough Money in the world to coax me back to that’ Weisz for “The Mummy 3”, says Variety.
Weisz takes on the role of Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell, the role Weisz (pre-“Constant Gardener” Oscar Win) played in the first two “Mummy” films. Interestingly enough, Bello looks very little like her predecessor… but I suppose it’s nothing a bottle of brown hair-dye - and some memory wiping chips for the audience – can’t fix. Either way, she’s a good choice – a good actress with an even better set of legs. And, um, being “The Mummy 3” that’s what really matters, right?
I’ve read the script, and I can’t say I’m in love with it. It’s pretty bloody Vanilla. In many respects, it had ‘direct to DVD sequel’ written all over it. I’m guessing when Brendan Fraser signed on to reprise his role as adventurer Rick O’Connell, they polished it a little more to his liking, but still, I’m pretty positive the guts of the story hasn’t changed – and that’s the main problem. It just isn’t that intriguing. Again, nothing a few special effects can’t fix.. .right? Er, yeah. We’ll see.
Scripted by "Smallville" creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, this one brings the O'Connells and their full-grown son (played by Aussie actor Luke Ford) to the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas, where they battle a shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor (Jet Li) cursed by a wizard (Michelle Yeoh).
I think I was actually a bigger fan of “The Scorpion King” – the spin-off from “The Mummy” movies, starring The Rock – than I was its parent film, and subsequent sequel. Granted, I’m a fan of Chuck Russell’s work, but I still think it was a much more solid popcorn-funnish flickeroo. There are some great moments in both “Mummy” movies, don’t get me wrong, but they’re not hole-in-ones that’s for sure.
It's not that I don't like this new actress but that's like getting someone else besides Karen Allen to play Marion in Indy 4 or something. This "news" makes it even less likely I will go see this film.

it looks like nobody will "go" to see this film, unless "going to see" implies that your mate has the DVD and you're going around to watch it? LOL
Rachel Weisz is one of my favorite British actresses, and shes got a fantastic body/legs department, any replacement would be an inferior choice, like replacing the leads in the sequel to mortal kombat or starship troopers 2.
it has a lot to live up to, and the original is still the best. it was on Tv on saturday so i got to see it again! yay

The Mummy 3, eh? I can see absolutely no good reason for this film. None. The second film was sub-par in my opinion, and now they're changing the entire dynamic by replacing the (totally hot) female lead, giving the main characters a full-grown son and transplanting them in an entirely new environment (China vs. Egypt). Why? What's the point? These films are called "The Mummy" for a reason...I dunno, I guess I shouldn't keep trying to make sense of Hollywood. ;D -GCR

This is beginning to sound more and more like one of those "Direct to DVD" sequels.......It's a shame really.

You're right, PH. It IS a shame. I really enjoyed the original Mummy film (well, not the original, original, the original remake...though for the record the original original was a good film as well) and I had high hopes for the sequel. Needless to say I was disappointed with what they conjured up for the second installment, but now things seem to have plunged even deeper into the abyss...

I'm sorry......Maria is a beautiful woman but she's not Evie. I know it sounds odd but she just doesn't look "British" if that makes any sense. There's something about her face that just screams...."I'm and American pretending to be British!" ;D

Did you know they were shooting that movie around here? Exteriors in Montréal and interiors in movies studio here in the suburbs...practically in my backyard. Too bad we can't get access.

Well, Brenden Fraiser sure looks cool. His winter costume reminds me of my own in the Lost City story. That set definitely looks great. I think the whole chemistry between Rick and his wife will be lost by putting in a new actress who's obviously not Rachel Weiss. They should have just written that character out of the story. That''ll probably go over about as well as when they had those look-a-likes come in on the old Dukes of Hazzard series. So am I to understand that Rick will have a teenage son as a sidekick? I can only hope that's not true. Whether this movie is good or not, It think it's doomed to drown in Indiana Jones comparisons and copycat accusations. Opening in the same summer sure won't help any.

I'm sure it will wind up being entertaining, but you're right... there seems to be many stumbling blocks to overcome already. Between the new actress in Evelyn's role (even if she's really good), the plot being about an Asian mummy versus an Egyptian one, and a teenage son tagging along as a partner... could all possibly lead to reduced attendance. Throw the inevitable Indy 4 comparisons into the mix, since they will occupy the same summer movie season, and this might be a tough set of hurdles to leap for the Mummy series.
Of course, I hope it does well regardless, as I think it's an entertaining franchise. I like the variety that a new locale will bring, since you can only fight the same bad guy so many times before boredom sets in.

Yeah, Rick looks cool but I just have no faith in the director at all......I think Jet will make a cool villain but as far as the rest of the movie goes......Who knows? Rick and Evie's son is supposed to be 18 or 19 in this and he's got his own love interest......from what I've heard. Sounds to me like they could continue the series with his kid in the lead.......sounds like the exact same rumors we've heard about the Indy franchise. Personally, I'd rather watch prequels to the Indy films.....But, I might be interested in a Indy Jr. movie.

Why do they even need a kid in Mummy 3? Is Brenden Fraiser even 40 years old? I know he can do action and I would think his hunky stud rating with women would be pretty high. Seems unnecessary. Kids are great but I question whether they belong in this kind of genre. "Don't look son while I shoot the Cairo swordsman and throw this Nazi into a propeller. I love our family time together." At least 007 still rides alone. His car has an ejector seat not a baby carseat.

That's just me though...maybe it'll be good, but with so many changes (locales, actors, characters, etc.) I see the cards being stacked against it a bit. -GCR

That's certainly an interesting collection of photos. I'm starting to warm up to the Chinese setting. I just hope it will have some adventure to it and not just be a CGI cartoon like the last one. I checked out the guy playing Rick's son. He looks about 5 years younger than Rick. Great. It's like they're trying to distract viewers from the fact that they lost Rachel Weiss by just putting in another useless character. They should have just teamed Rick up with his always in trouble (and strangely Scottish) brother in law. It might have worked better as a bickering buddy adventure film. We'll see I guess.
