Corellia,
Go easy with the sanding. A few surface scratches to break up the gloss is good - but more will only reveal more of the same until you begin to expose the fabric underneath.
KT's suggestion of dry brushing some lighter colors is excellent. Some tan, some amber and some beige. Try to highlight what leather grain texture is still left on it. The brush marks will look like scratches. When you have it the way you want, a little sealant with dull krylon crystal clear will keep the paint on.
If you really want to grunge it up, some smudges of leather glue, some amber shellac, and some oily black rubbed in will really do a number.

again, thanks for the hints guys, you're great! I gently rubbed the surface with soft sanding paper, and I'm very pleased with the results. it looks a little lighter now and a bit scraped which is great. I'll go for a second sanding run and darkening some edges later but I'm content for the moment. here's a little before-and-after picture: Greetings ~ The results look outstanding thus far. I like the highlights (for my 00.02) worth ~ Take your time, adding some here and there, and it will "take on" more of the look your are trying to achieve. Never rush it, when you are happy with the results, then it will look good. Since I am (natural use) distresser, I would (think) on how it would be "used and distressed" if it was used in various arenas around the galaxy. Respects! IE

thanks bennjamin.. hell I've completely forgotten about that thread by now I've been trashing the belt around in the garden a little before christmas.. it looks a little more "used" than in these pics now, with some uneven dents and scratches in it. I'm quite content. I haven't distressed the buckle yet though.
