I have two Westeds and a Todd's all of which don't fit me very well. I'm thinking about selling them. So, I'm thinking about picking up a super-picky-stitchcountingly-accurate Raiders jacket from Indy Magnoli. I'm going to do some independent research on screen caps and just try to get a jacket that looks exactly the way I want it to. (pus I like his plaid wool lining).
So, I'm wondering what everybody's thoughts are on this. If you were me, would you do it?

Kap,
I have only seen a few pics of the Magnoli Jacket and I was not all that impressed. They did not seem all that SA to me. IMHO.
Do you own an Expedition?
Cheers, John

I have two expeditions. One in lamb and one in goat. I love them, and they fit me perfectly. I was just thinking that maybe I could give IM a laundry list of specs. But I'm very interested in your opinion John. What specifically about the jacket doesn't impress you? I'm not crazy about the collar or the leather (of course there are more leathers to choose from)

Kap, what don't you like about the Expeditions that makes you want another Indy jacket? I'm probably going to pick up a Lamb Expedition at the beginning of the year. I know Magnoli's got a lot of different options with all of his stuff but I've never seen anyone wearing one of his jackets!

If I remember correctly the pockets were too squared off at the bottoms and something about the back panel bothered me.
My biggest problem with Magnoli's gear (besides the fact that all his clothing is outsourced) is that it is just too fancy for Indy Gear.
This is no way meant as a cheap shot at Magnoli. His clothing is high quality.
Cheers, John

How do you want it, sugar coated? Or right between the eyes?

Please, nobody get me wrong here. I LOVE my expeditions. I wear them every day. Harry, you should definitely get an expedition if you are thinking about it. Here's my thought process: I have two Westeds that I will never wear again. I have a Todd's jacket in cow that was to fill the spot of "my SA jacket" that I will never wear again. All three of these jackets are too small. I thought maybe I could buy a SA jacket with the measurements of my Expos (that fit me well) and add a wool lining so that it could be my "warmer" jacket. I'm wanting 3 jackets for 3 types of weather. light jacket: Lamb Expo Med jacket: Goat Expo "warmer" jacket: ???IM cow w/ wool lining??? I'm very worried about the very fact that you pointed out Harry. WHY HAVEN'T WE SEEN ANYBODY BUY ONE OF THESE?

I know Ob1al had bought the prototype but sold it a few months later.
It also looks too long in the pictures for my taste.
If you order one I hope you like it because I don't think IM offers refunds.
Cheers, G-MANN

I just tried looking for them but I think they are history now. You could get another Expedition and have someone local put in a warmer liner. Cheers, John

You know, I guess it's a pretty bad sign, when nobody we know seems to own, or want to keep an IM jacket. It's very tempting to me to think about the possibilities though. But when I start thinking about gear like this, my wallet always gets thinner, and I'm only satisfied half of the time.

I was quoting Ford from "Six Days, Seven Nights". After reading your more detailed reasons, I get that you are looking for variations of the design for different weather conditions. I agree with John completely about the Magnoli jacket based on the few pics I've seen from the one guy who bought one. The design is just way off and the price is typically Magnoli, if I remember correctly. I'm sure it's made well, as he's no slouch on quality. Would he custom make one to you laundry list of specs? I'm sure he would say yes. But, if his regular pattern is that far off to begin with, how much trust can you put in him to get the detailed modifications you send him right? How about ordering an Expo in another hide like goatskin for example, then seeing if they will add a custom liner for you. They do offer a custom "made to order" jacket for a higher price as well: www.flightsuits.com/leather_madetoorder.htmlAnd a "made to measure" option: www.flightsuits.com/leather_specialsize.htmlSo, I'm sure they would do something as simple as drop in a different liner for you. Just a thought, Ken

Thanks guys! I'm glad I got your respective opinions on this one. I've made so many gear purchase mistakes, I just can't afford to make any more I guess I should look into other options as you guys have said.

If you need the bag I have an extra Original that I may put up for sale. It has the Todd's Deluxe strap attached.
Cheers, John

It's funny you mention that, I actually called WPG about one earlier today, but didn't pull the trigger. I'd be very interested in the details. Feel free to PM me.

Ok, so another question for everyone. I'm thinking I'm really looking for the following three things. What would be my best option? 1)A different leather than I have with my two expos 2)A warmer jacket 3)SA specs (The most important being: small gauge nickel zipper all the way to the bottom, yoke above arm seam, high arm holes, collar meets stormflap halfway, no leather facings)
G&B won't do the zipper to the bottom, so that's the deal breaker.
How's wested these days? Could I send Peter a laundry list and expect to get what I asked for? I'm considering horsehide. Sliders are easy to replace, but he gets asked for mods day in and day out, but the only westeds I have seen with the correct zipper, collar, yoke belong to Agent 5 and the one that Platon sold to Rick5150.

Hi.just wanted to let you know I am waiting on a Magnoli hard copy of the LC jacket. In my experience with all my buys from Magnoli is that he is really paying attention about details. He has asked me over and over for minor details on the jacket.I think he is doing a great job on it.He is also in contact with smithsonian and they are mailing him the most accurate measures, pictures and details of the LC jacket.
I am waitning on mine mid january.I will post pictures of it if you guys want to see it. Let me know
Regards Holt

Kaplan, I own a Wested horsehide, and I really enjoy it. I was a little hesitant about horsehide, because a few A-2s I had seen were a bit stiff. Even some pics of HH jackets folks had posted showed the jackets standing up on their own.
Not the case with the Wested HH I own. It is softer than the Wetsed goat, and much more pliable. It is heavier, though. I feel this aids in the drape of the jacket. My HH has an all cotton liner, and it makes it feel warmer(in the arms, anyway) than my satin sleeve jackets.
Wested will install different materials for the liners, if you let them know. At least they used to be open to this. A guy over at COW had sent Wested some flannel material, and they used that for the lining.
Only thing to worry about is the randomness of Westeds accuracy, and attention to details that you request. I have been very lucky with 5 out of 6 Westeds that have passed through my hands. Funny thing is, the only one that was a mistake, was my custom order. All the others were used Westeds. 'Blues

I don't know why people that want "All weather" Indy jackets haven't tried to see if some of these companies would customize the jackets with zip out liners like my regular leather jacket has. I don't even know why I didn't look into that. That way you could wear the jacket around with your gear in the summer and not sweat your butt off.... I see that Flightsuits has that option...

I noticed that too, but I have no idea why I didn't consider. I think it's a good idea. I'd like to get an idea of the warmer liner that FS uses. By the way, does anyone have any info on FS's "mahogany" HH? How does that color compare to their "seal brown" leathers?

Well, it listed a Thinsulate "Zip In" vest for $58. Which sounds exactly like what I have in my black leather jacket. It really does work quite nicely. I've never taken it out though because I have no reason to wear my black jacket during the summer but with my Indy jacket it's a different story...... I *may* think about doing this with mine when I order my Indy jacket from them. I mean really $58 doesn't add that much to the price. It's to bad I don't know of anyone that's ordered one like that before though.

hmm....I wonder if they could do a shearling style wool liner while making the jacket look normal on the outside...now THAT would be cool.

I recently ordered Magnoli's "Vintage Adventure Jacket" minus the flannel lining. I will gladly post pics and a review when it comes. I'm going to base my choice of a new Indy jacket on how that one turns out. I'm not a screen-accurate nut, though, and that seems to be the main reason people don't buy IM's Indy Jacket. I've had fit problems and issues with several jackets, including my Wested, which managed to be too short even when asked for extra length. At least with Magnoli, I can tell him how long I want the jacket and that's what I'll get. So I'm leaning that way. If the "Vintage" is a success, my next Indy Jacket will be an IM. Then I'll have a complete set! I'll be able to go IM from the hat to... oh, wait. I won't have the boots.
